Our Donations at Work: Crossing Borders with Music in Kaifeng Children’s Village

The SOS Children’s Village in Kaifeng received some special visitors recently: two concert pianists from Belarus who made a special stopover on their tour of China. In between a busy schedule performing in universities and theaters, B.A. Molapt took the time to visit the children of Kaifeng and introduce them to a variety of Western musical forms, from waltzes to Russian folk songs.

The kids were especially interested because, thanks to SOS Children’s Villages funding, they have a small orchestra of their own, and after the performance they thanked their Belarusian guests by playing a few songs on traditional Chinese instruments. Pianist B.A. Molapt was highly impressed with the skill of the children, and had as many questions for them about their performance as they had about his.

In Kaifeng, SOS Children’s Villages doesn’t just provide the necessities of life, but also some of its joys. The music programme provides the children who live there with the same benefits music gives to any child: teaching discipline, commitment, and artistry. But additionally, through cultural exchanges like this one, it provides kids who have very little with a glimpse of the world beyond their borders and what they might be able to contribute to it. Not only can the globetrotting master pianist teach them, but he can learn from them as well.
